Duties:

The Vancouver Island University (VIU) Geography department maintains a variety of undergraduate and post-graduate offerings across three knowledge streams: Environment, Society, and Sustainability, Sustainable Resource Management, and a General Stream. Our geography program provides a balance of theoretical and applied course work designed to strengthen student communication skills, deliver a range of employable skills, challenge students to think critically, analyze problems and seek resolutions to issues in areas of geographic interests. VIU, with its commitment to student success and community engagement, offers the exciting opportunities of small classes, a high level of student-instructor interaction, and applied learning.

Teach one Geography course section which includes the preparation and delivery of lectures, assessments, and evaluation of students, and provision of student support during office hours. This course is to be offered at the Nanaimo campus.

GEOG 330 (3) Space, Place, and Culture

An exploration of people and the places they live with a focus on place-making, the environment, cultural identities, inequalities and cultural landscapes across a range of spatial scales. GEOG 330 was formerly called GEOG 230; credit will not be granted for both courses. (3:0:0)

Candidates must demonstrate commitment to teaching, learning and student success through scholarship and institutional service. Successful candidates will participate in a wide range of activities outside the classroom, including student support; institutional, faculty and departmental committee meetings and other initiatives; and professional activities in keeping with their disciplines in and outside the institution.

Required Qualifications:

  • A doctoral degree in Geography, Environmental Studies, or a related discipline from an accredited institution.
  • Requisite experience and expertise to be qualified to teach Geography 330.
  • Recent experience in teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses in the relevant subject areas; face-to-face teaching experience and demonstrated excellence in teaching.

(Note: Candidates who hold a Master's degree and have relevant teaching experience may be considered).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in Geography from an accredited institution. Priority will be given to those with teaching competencies in Urban and Social Sustainability.
  • Experience with integration of indigenous perspectives, Geographic Information Systems, and a commitment to innovative teaching practices and technologies into the curriculum are highly desirable.
  • An RPP designation (or eligibility to for membership with the Planning Institute of BC) would be considered an asset.
