Instructors, Practical Nursing
The Faculty of Health Sciences and Human Services includes the Departments of Child and Youth Care, Dental Assistant, Dental Hygiene, Health Care Assistant, Nursing, Practical Nursing, Social Work, Kinesiology, and a Professional Development and Training department. The mission of the Faculty is to foster student success and develop and maintain relevant, responsive, and stimulating learning opportunities that are community-based, globally and locally, and offered in a visionary, interprofessional environment that is conducive to learning and promotes health and wellness for all. The Dean and the Dean's Office lead, manage, administer and support the instructional, scholarly and outreach activities of the Faculty on four campuses with this mission in mind. VIU is seeking dynamic nursing instructors to deliver a variety of courses (some virtual) within the Practical Nursing (PN) program at our Nanaimo, and tiwšɛmawtxʷ campuses for the 2026/2027 academic year. Duties:
PN Instructors participate in wide variety of teaching and learning opportunities in clinical, lab and classroom settings including: the preparation and delivery of class content; the design and grading of student assignments and tests; and, the facilitation of student integration of theory and practice.
The successful candidate will have the ability to work in a team-oriented Faculty in an institution that is primarily focused on students and teaching. Candidates must be able to foster student success, develop stimulating learning opportunities and participate in instructional advising with students.
Candidates will also participate in activities outside the classroom including departmental and faculty meetings, contribute to program activities related to curriculum and administrative planning activities.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an appropriately accredited institution with current practicing BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) in good standing;
Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) from an appropriately accredited institution with current practicing BC College of Nurses and Midwifes (BCCNM) in good standing;
The BC Provincial Instructor Diploma Program, or its equivalent, completed or in progress, or a commitment to engage in the training (maximum two years to completion) from an accredited institution
A minimum of five years recent medical, surgical and gerontological nursing experience;
Familiar with practice settings in Central Vancouver Island including community, gerontology and acute care;
Responsive to a diverse student population;
A solid understanding of the scope and role of LPNs in the Health Care System;
Proficiency with the application and integration of information technology;
Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal ways of knowing and cultural teachings.
Must possess a valid Class 5 BC Driver's License and have a confirmed satisfactory driving record. Some positions require travel to a variety of practice locations.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree in nursing or related field from an appropriately accredited institution.
Experience teaching adults in a post-secondary setting.
Familiarity with computer applications and learning management systems (D2L) in an educational setting.
