Starting Salary
Normal salary placement at the time of hire is $104,043 (prorated if part-time). This position is eligible for annual performance-based salary increases.

Duties:

Vancouver Island University (VIU) is seeking an experienced and highly organized Project Manager to oversee the planning, execution and delivery of construction, renovation, and infrastructure projects that supports VIU's academic, research, and operational needs.

With a focus on small-to-mid-scale projects, the Project Manager will independently provide full project management services to clients, ensuring timely completion while adhering to project scope, budget, and quality standards. The successful candidate will effectively coordinate resources, stakeholders, and vendors.

The Project Manager works within a project planning and delivery team, and plays a critical role in shaping the built campus environment at VIU's campuses across multiple locations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage all aspects of assigned minor and major projects that includes planning, scope identification scheduling and budget control.
  • Oversee project planning, budgeting, execution, and close-out, adhering to VIU's project management processes, to ensure successful project completion and compliance with all contractual obligations.
  • Monitor progress throughout the project lifecycle, identify potential risks, and implement corrective action to ensure to ensure on-time, on-scope, and on-budget delivery.
  • Collaborate with internal teams, external consultants, and contractors to achieve project objectives.
  • Support project delivery by applying industry-recognized project management methodologies, utilizing standardized tools and processes such as project charters, work plans, communication plans, and risk analysis.
  • Ensures all projects meet specifications and adheres to relevant building codes, university standards, policies, procedures, and best practices. Conduct regular site visits and quality checks, and address any deviations.

Working Conditions:

  • Frequent on-site presence to monitor construction activities and ensure compliance with project requirements.
  • Occasional after-hours or emergency response may be required.
  • Travel to other campus locations as required.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Engineering, Project or Construction Management, or a related discipline from an appropriately accredited institution.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Strong project management skills with a focus on tactical execution and problem-solving.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills for engaging with diverse stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in project management tools and reporting systems.
  • Ability to management multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of national and provincial codes, standards, and sustainability practices (i.e. NBC, LEED).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Project Management Professional (PMP) or other relevant certification.
  • At least 6 years of construction project management experience, preferably in the education or public sector.
  • Experience working with public procurement processes, budget management, and regulatory compliance.
  • Strong leadership, budgeting, risk management, and stakeholder engagement skills.
