Under Direction of the WEST Faculty and reporting to the tiwšɛmawtxʷ Operations Manager, this position provides in-person, hands-on workplace training and supervision of students as they transfer and apply classroom learning to a variety of workplaces.

Duties:

  • Training students in job and employability skills programming
  • Accommodating learning styles, strengths, and diverse abilities
  • Implementing skills training plans, monitoring skill development, and adapting to individual learner needs
  • Providing safety training and monitoring, following WorkSafeBC and VIU protocols
  • Completing workplace evaluation checklists with employers and students
  • Providing ongoing feedback and support to students in performing work tasks and applying skills in the workplace
  • Acquiring and maintaining work experience/training placement locations for students
  • Providing information, support and direction to students, employers, community support staff and practicum students in relation to WEST training
  • Under direction of WEST Faculty and the tiwšɛmawtxʷ Professional Development and Training Program Coordinator, assisting in student performance reviews and participating in exit transition planning to facilitate successful outcomes for students
  • Maintaining effective and ongoing communication with other team members to ensure consistency in goals and methodologies
  • Maintaining checklists
  • Participating in staff meetings and other meetings

Required qualifications: 

Bachelor's degree in Special Education, Disability Studies, Social Work, Human Services or related field from an appropriately accredited institution. or equivalent, from an appropriately accredited institution, and a minimum of five years recent experience working with people with disabilities. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Additionally, the successful candidate will demonstrate:

  • Experience implementing skill-training programs and to deliver effective hands-on vocational training
  • Success developing jobs, securing work experience/training placements and working with employers
  • Ability to modify and develop individualized work placements
  • Ability to positively manage challenging behaviours
  • Solid understanding of service-industry employment and skills necessary for employability and success
  • Working knowledge of principles of normalization, inclusion, and issues in the workplace for persons with a disability
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective professional boundaries in working with students, colleagues and employers
  • Ability to foster increasing and appropriate levels of student independence
  • Ability to represent the institution in the community in a professional manner
  • Proven interpersonal and teamwork skills
  • Effective communication, verbally and in writing
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills
  • Creativity and flexibility in problem-solving
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Physical ability to do a variety of tasks, including lifting up to 20 kg
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's license and a confirmed satisfactory driving record

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field
  • 5 years recent experience working with people with disabilities
  • FoodSafe and SuperHost
  • Valid Class 4 Driver's license (and a confirmed satisfactory driving record)
  • Familiarity with VIU systems, policies and procedures
  • Training in trauma-informed practice
